Cross-border M&A/Alliance
– Frontier of International Business Research

Purpose:

M&A has been regarded as an important issue in strategic management for more than 100 years, but most cases have been said to fail.
Especially regarding cross-border M&A of large-scale enterprises, there are very few successful cases in Western countries, which are the most advanced countries for M&A.
However, due to the emergence of a global competitive environment referred to as volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), the need for cross-border M&A and cross-border alliances as an extension thereof is increasing both in theory and practice.
Japanese companies, which have conventionally thought to be the weakest at M&A/alliances, are also rapidly changing their global strategies.
Paradoxically speaking, being skilled in cross-border M&A/alliance management leads to the acquisition of new global competitive advantage of Japanese companies and at the same time is an urgent issue for international business researchers in Japan to contribute to.
